Coed Farm Instructional Softball (Grades Pre-K to 1st Grade)

The softball and baseball programs for Wayland’s youngest players merged this year into a co-ed instructional league.  Wayland Girl’s Softball Divisions are currently grade based (not age-based) due to league rules.  ALL girls will transition into our Girls Softball Program in 2nd Grade.  To facilitate this transition, all 1st Grade girls, regardless of age, will play in the Co-Ed Spinners Instructional Division.

The Co-Ed Instructional Spinners Division is a Tee Ball League and follows Little League’s Tee Ball guidelines and standards. This division will meet 1x per week on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-7:30 pm.

This league is open to boys and girls ages 5 and 6 as of 8/31/18 and ALL girls in grade 1. All players in this division will throw and hit an Incrediball; a small, soft covered ball designed to build confidence.  Softballs are not used at this age because the larger size can promote improper throwing mechanics.  Girls will throw and hit softballs in Grade 2 when they enter our Girls Softball Program.

Rookie Softball (Grades 2nd and 3rd)

Rookie Softball is an instructional program for girls in grades 2 and 3.  No previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary. Our Rookie program was developed as a progressive program to transition girls from our Co-Ed Instructional Farm League to our Girls Softball Program.

The mission of Rookie Softball is to introduce Wayland girls to softball in a fun and engaging way while focusing on a progression of skill development. Rookie Softball is held on Sundays and Tuesdays at Wayland Middle School.  The first half of the season consists of fun, fast-paced drills at multiple stations to help girls develop softball basics such as hitting, throwing, and catching.  In addition to drills, we will play controlled scrimmages to allow the girls to apply these skills in a game situation.  The second half of the season brings competitive live softball with 4 coach-pitch softball games played in Wayland and Weston.  Rookie Softball will begin the week after April school vacation and continues through mid-June.

Junior Softball (Grades 4th and 5th)

Junior Softball is for Wayland girls in grades 4 and 5.  No previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary.  This is a developmental league without tryouts.  All who sign up will be included on a first come first served basis.

The mission of Junior Softball is to foster girls’ interest and passion for softball in a fun and engaging way while continuing to develop the basic skills of softball.  Junior Softball participates in a Metrowest league which includes Wayland, Weston, and Wellesley.  Practices, instructional scrimmages, and live competitive games are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 PM with occasional games on Saturday afternoon.  There is an exciting single elimination round of playoffs at the end of the season.  All teams make the playoffs.

The goal is to start the season as close to the beginning of April as possible.  Weather and access to indoor facilities dictate start date.  Games start the week after April school vacation and continue through mid-June.

Senior Softball (Grades 6th, 7th and 8th)

Senior Softball is for Wayland girls in grades 6-8. This league is competitive as well as developmental. While previous experience with softball or baseball is not required, many players will have played at some level before. HOWEVER, PLAYERS HAVE ENTERED AT THIS LEAGUE AND GONE ON TO SCHOLASTIC SOFTBALL. This is a balanced league without tryouts.  All who sign up will be included on a first come first served basis.

The mission of the Senior Softball program is to foster girls’ interest and passion for softball with a fun and engaging program.
